
Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Dami Mamza, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Yola, Nigeria, has been elected as the First Vice President of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM).
The election occurred during the 20th SECAM Plenary Assembly in Kigali, Rwanda, where African bishops convened to discuss the Church’s mission across the continent.
The newly elected leadership includes:Fridolin Cardinal Ambongo as President, Most Rev. Stephen Dami Mamza as First Vice President, Most Rev. José Manuel Imbamba as Second Vice President, Rev. Bridge Gabriel Edoe Kumordji is to serve as Treasurer
Others are Rev. Fr. Rafael Simbine Junior as Secretary General, Rev. Fr. Zéphirin Moube as First Deputy Secretary General, while Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina will serve as Second Deputy Secretary General.
The election of a bishop from a Portuguese-speaking country as the Second Vice President underscores SECAM’s commitment to inclusivity and representation within Africa’s diverse linguistic and regional landscape.
Bishop Mamza’s election to this leadership role reflects his dedication to the Church in Africa and his commitment to promoting unity, evangelisation, and social justice across the continent. His experience in interfaith dialogue, peacebuilding—especially in northeastern Nigeria—and pastoral leadership makes him a suitable choice for this position.
