ADSU Confers Honorary Doctorate Degree of Theology on Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza

The Adamawa State University, Mubi, has conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Theology (Honoris Causa) on the Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Dami Mamza, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to peacebuilding, humanitarian service, and moral leadership within Adamawa State and beyond.

The conferment took place during the institution’s 16th and 17th combined convocation ceremony held at the university campus in Mubi, where distinguished personalities, top government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and members of the academic community gathered to celebrate excellence and service to humanity.

In his citation, Bishop Mamza was described as “a beacon of hope and a symbol of unity in a society challenged by conflict and division.” He was commended for his unwavering commitment to peace advocacy, interfaith dialogue, education, and humanitarian outreach, particularly his work in supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) during and after the Boko Haram insurgency.

“Bishop Mamza’s leadership transcends the pulpit. He has become a moral compass and a unifying voice for both Christians and Muslims in Adamawa State. His courage, humility, and humanitarian interventions reflect the ideals of a true servant-leader,”

Receiving the award, Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Dami Mamza expressed deep appreciation to the university management and the Adamawa State Government for the honor bestowed upon him. He dedicated the award to the people of Adamawa State, especially those who have suffered the effects of insecurity, displacement, and poverty.

“This honorary degree is not just for me; it is for every man, woman, and child who has kept faith and hope alive in the face of adversity,”Bishop Mamza stated.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the service of humanity, pledging to continue working for peace, social justice, and education through the platforms of the Catholic Diocese of Yola and the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC).

 

The Bishop also used the occasion to commend the Adamawa State University for maintaining academic excellence despite challenges faced by tertiary institutions in the region. He urged students to pursue knowledge with integrity and use their education to transform society positively.

Prominent dignitaries at the event included the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who is the visitor of the institution, members of the State Executive Council, the Chairman of the University Governing Council, traditional rulers, clergy, and academic scholars.

Governor Fintiri, in his goodwill message, congratulated Bishop Mamza for the well-deserved recognition, describing him as “a pillar of peace and a shining example of moral leadership in Adamawa and Nigeria at large.”

The convocation ceremony also featured the conferment of degrees and awards on graduating students, as well as other eminent Nigerians honored for their contributions to national development.
