The Adamawa State Government has defended its response to the devastating floods that occurred recently, emphasising its swift and effective actions during the emergency.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, the government described suggestions—especially those made by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—that it was unprepared or inactive during the disaster as unfair and misleading. The floods displaced hundreds of residents across the state.
The government highlighted its ongoing investments in flood mitigation infrastructure, including storm drains and waterways, which are aimed at reducing the state’s vulnerability to seasonal flooding. It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in all communities.
“We take exception to any insinuation that the Fintiri administration neglected the people,” the statement read. “The Deputy Governor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, immediately mobilised emergency agencies, including the military and marine police, to affected areas following the incident.”
The statement also noted that the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) was responsible for delivering urgent relief materials—such as food items, medical supplies, and shelter—to displaced families. It emphasised that the boats used in the rescue operations are owned by the state government, highlighting its preparedness for such emergencies.
The government recalled its proactive measures in past incidents, mentioning its prompt support during last year’s flooding in Borno State, where it was among the first to provide cash and logistical assistance to affected communities. This demonstrates its consistent commitment to emergency response.
Regarding the discussions surrounding the abandoned Chochi flood-control project, the statement clarified that this project was neither initiated nor abandoned by the current administration. It urged the public to verify facts and avoid placing blame inaccurately.
Wonosikou appealed to citizens and political figures to refrain from spreading misinformation, especially at a time when unity and accurate communication are crucial. “Politics aside, the people of Adamawa deserve accurate information and support,” he stated. “We hope to set the record straight and remain focused on assisting our citizens through this challenging time.”
Relief efforts continued on Monday in the affected communities, with emergency teams working to assess the damage and provide assistance as floodwaters gradually receded
