The Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Dami Mamza, has urged Muslims and Christians to deepen their bonds of friendship and cooperation as Nigerians prepare for the 2027 general elections.
Bishop Mamza made the appeal in his Eid-ul-Mawlid message to the Muslim community, describing the celebration as an opportunity for believers to renew their commitment to peace, compassion, righteousness and obedience to God.
He said the approaching political season requires citizens to be particularly vigilant against actions and rhetoric capable of creating religious, ethnic or political divisions.
The Bishop called on Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech and political manipulation, stressing that elections should be a means of strengthening democracy rather than creating conflict among communities.
According to him, the dignity and safety of every person must be protected, regardless of faith or political affiliation.
Bishop Mamza further emphasized the importance of interfaith understanding, noting that Christianity and Islam share important values, including belief in one God, prayer and submission to the will of God.
He said the experience of communities in Adamawa demonstrates that Christians and Muslims can work together to overcome challenges, rebuild affected communities and support vulnerable people
He cited the Salama Housing Estate for resettled internally displaced persons as an example of how cooperation can help restore dignity and hope to families affected by displacement.
The Catholic Bishop urged religious leaders and citizens to use their influence to promote dialogue, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, saying Nigeria’s diversity should be viewed as a source of strength.
He also called on political actors and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly before, during and after the 2027 elections.
Bishop Mamza prayed for God’s blessings upon the Muslim faithful, wishing them wisdom, good health and prosperity and urging all Nigerians to remain committed to peace and the common good.
He concluded by wishing the Muslim community a peaceful and blessed Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration.
