Bell Dome Hospital’s Breakthrough Spinal Surgery Saves Patient from Paralysis

Bell Dome Hospital, a private medical facility along Numan Road in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, has successfully performed a groundbreaking spinal cord surgery, saving 35-year-old Solomon Tizhe from imminent paralysis.

The state-of-the-art hospital, equipped with cutting-edge technology and staffed by a highly skilled team, has once again demonstrated its pivotal role in transforming Adamawa into a hub for advanced medical care, stepping in where public hospitals have faltered due to incessant strikes.

The life-saving surgery, the first of its kind at Bell Dome Hospital, was conducted by a specialized team comprising neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, theater nurses, and radiographers. Their expertise and the hospital’s advanced facilities ensured the successful stabilization of Solomon Tizhe, an indigene of Maiwandu community in Madagali Local Government Area, who faced a dire prognosis following a tragic accident.

Tizhe’s ordeal began a month ago when he fell from a tree, sustaining severe spinal injuries. Initially rushed to Michika General Hospital, he was referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yola on July 7, where he was admitted to the emergency unit. However, his treatment was significantly delayed due to a nurses’ strike at FMC Yola, which Tizhe says exacerbated his condition.

“For almost a month, I was left in pain with no progress because of the strike,” Tizhe recounted. “My health deteriorated, and I feared I would never walk again.” It was only after a recommendation from a concerned individual that Tizhe was transferred to Bell Dome Hospital, where swift intervention turned his fate around.

Three days after the complex spinal surgery, Tizhe expressed profound gratitude for his stable condition, crediting Bell Dome Hospital’s rapid response and world-class care for his recovery. “I am alive and hopeful today because of Bell Dome,” he said. “Their intervention saved me from a life of paralysis.”

Dr. Abdullahi Dauda Belel, the Chief Executive Officer and Proprietor of Bell Dome Hospital, confirmed the success of the procedure in an interview with our Yola correspondent. “The spinal surgery was a resounding success, stabilizing Mr. Tizhe’s condition and preventing paralysis,” Dr. Belel stated.

“After the surgical wounds heal, he will undergo physiotherapy sessions to further enhance his recovery and mobility.” He emphasized that the delay in treatment at FMC Yola had complicated Tizhe’s condition, noting, “If immediate intervention had been available on the day of the accident, further nerve damage could have been prevented.”

Dr. Belel’s remarks underscore a broader issue plaguing public healthcare facilities in Nigeria, where frequent strikes, such as the recent nurses’ strike at FMC Yola, disrupt critical care and leave patients vulnerable.

Bell Dome Hospital, with its state-of-the-art equipment and robust technology, has emerged as a beacon of hope, filling the gap left by public hospitals. The facility’s ability to attract patients from as far as Lagos, as highlighted in a 2022 Fact Check News report, underscores its growing reputation as a center for medical tourism in Adamawa State.

The hospital’s success in performing complex procedures like spinal cord surgery highlights its commitment to saving lives and restoring hope. Unlike public hospitals, which are often hamstrung by bureaucratic inefficiencies and industrial actions, Bell Dome Hospital operates with a patient-centered approach, ensuring timely and high-quality care.

Dr. Belel called on the administration of Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Governor of Adamawa State, to establish specialized centers across the state’s three senatorial districts to handle advanced procedures like spinal surgery. “Such facilities would prevent the loss of able-bodied men and women who are the backbone of our state’s economy,” he urged.

The story of Solomon Tizhe is a powerful testament to Bell Dome Hospital’s transformative impact on healthcare in Adamawa. While public hospitals like FMC Yola struggle with systemic challenges, including strikes that delay life-saving treatments, Bell Dome stands out as a reliable lifeline, offering cutting-edge medical solutions and hope to those in need.

As Tizhe prepares for his physiotherapy sessions, his recovery serves as a clarion call for investment in specialized healthcare infrastructure to ensure that no patient is left behind due to systemic failures.
