The Adamawa state government, under Project 10 Million, has screened 230,435 residents with hypertension and diabetes Mellitus across the state.

During the official flag-off of the screening exercise under the non-communicable diseases, governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri approved health insurance enrolment for those who tested positive.

Project 10 Million is a nationwide initiative that prioritizes the health of Nigerians, themed, “Know your number, control your number” and is aimed at screening 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, during the flag off of a weeklong screening exercise in Adamawa, expressed commitment to improve the healthcare standards across the state and ensure that citizens have the chance to know their health status, seek early intervention, and adopt preventive measures.

Represented by his deputy professor Kaletapwa Farauta, the governor, while commending the efforts of health workers, other key stakeholders, and partners for their crucial role in the campaign, tasked them with professionalism during the exercise.

He underscored the importance of teamwork, mobilizing the citizens and raising awareness on the significance of the campaign, adding that those found in need of further care will be referred to the state’s healthcare facilities for specialized attention and guidance on managing their health.

Earlier, the state commissioner for health and human services Chief Felix Tangwami and the executive chairman primary healthcare development agency Dr Suleiman Saidu Bashir said the health initiative is geared towards promoting health equity, boosting public health awareness, improving health data collection, and fostering collaboration between healthcare providers, government agencies, traditional and religious leaders as well the community members.

The whole objective, according to them, is to enhance equitable access to health services and ensure every citizen receives the quality care they deserve.

The stakeholders acknowledged the significant strides made by Governor Fintiri-led administration in providing accessible, affordable and quality healthcare for all the people of Adamawa, noting that the governor’s support and commitment to the health sector has been a cornerstone of the progress recorded.

They revealed that an estimated 1.28 billion adults aged 30 to 79 suffer from hypertension and diabetes globally, with two-thirds of these cases occurring in low and middle-income countries, where nearly half of the population remains undiagnosed.
