Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has officially kicked off the much-anticipated 2025 Governor’s Cup at the FCE Football Pitch, Yola, marking the return of the prestigious competition after more than a decade.

Representing the governor at the event, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr. Edgar Amos, urged all 21 participating local government teams to compete fairly and abide by the championship’s rules and regulations. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth empowerment, particularly in sports and entrepreneurship development.

The opening ceremony was attended by members of the State Executive Council, local government chairmen, and football enthusiasts from across the state.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barrister Wali Yakubu, and the ALGON Chairman, Suleiman Gangkuba, commended Governor Fintiri for reviving the Governor’s Cup, which had been abandoned by previous administrations. They described the tournament as a vital platform for youth engagement and talent development.

In the opening match, Yola North faced off against Guyuk Local Government, with Yola North securing a 1-0 victory.

The week-long tournament is expected to revitalize sporting activities in Adamawa State and serve as a springboard for young football talents.
