The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria, Yola Diocese, has organized the third edition of a football competition known as the Bishop Stephen Dami Mama Football Competition and Cathedraticum 2025.
During the opening ceremony, Bishop Stephen Dami Mama of the Catholic Diocese of Yola encouraged the youth to view the tournament as a friendly competition aimed at fostering unity rather than a cutthroat event.
Currently taking place at the Saint Peter’s Seminary football field, this competition marks its third year since its inception. Bishop Dami emphasized that the goal is to unite the eight deaneries within the Catholic Diocese of Yola to work together in spreading the Gospel and being agents of good news.

He urged participants to approach the competition with a spirit of camaraderie, adhere to the rules of the game, and maintain good conduct while competing for the trophy. Bishop Dami Mama expressed his hope that, by the tournament’s conclusion, players will be even more committed to promoting unity and serving the church.
Mr. Ijai James, the chairman of the Laity Council of Yola Diocese, also addressed the youth, encouraging them to play with maturity, discipline, and respect for the rules. He emphasized that this experience can help them grow both morally and spiritually.

Additionally, Mr. John Ndasaya, chairman of the organizing committee for the tournament, along with Vincent Christopher, president of the Catholic Youth Organization of Yola Diocese, expressed optimism that this year’s edition is better organized than last year’s. They both thanked Bishop Dami Mama for his support in making the football competition a success.
The opening match of the competition featured a game between the Numan Deanery and the Jimeta Deanery.
