The Catholic Bishop of the Yola Diocese, Most Reverend Dr Stephen Dami Mamza, has expressed commendation for the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Vigilante Group in Numan for their effective intelligence sharing and operational efforts that culminated in the successful rescue of Fr. Matthew Dutsemi and Fr. Abraham Saumman.
In detailing the operations that led to the safe retrieval of the two abducted priests belonging to the Yola and Jalingo Dioceses, which occurred in Numan Local Government at Saint Ann Parish Gweda Mallam, Bishop Mamza conveyed profound appreciation to all entities involved in the rescue mission.
He credited the successful operation to the unwavering commitment of the DSS and the local vigilantes, who remained actively engaged from the onset of the priests’ abduction until their eventual liberation.
“The DSS and the Vigilante Numan were pivotal in the rescue,” Bishop Mamza articulated.
Furthermore, he indicated that several items recovered from the suspected kidnapper, including a motorcycle and mobile phones belonging to the victims, are currently in the custody of the DSS, which is conducting investigations to ascertain the identities of any accomplices involved in the abduction.
Bishop Mamza also acknowledged the overwhelming support and prayers received from individuals and organizations globally, characterizing this as a sincere demonstration of solidarity with the Catholic Diocese of Yola and the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo.
“Since the abduction of our priests, we have worked diligently in collaboration with the DSS and the vigilante forces,” he asserted.
He refuted allegations claiming that the suspected kidnapper, Tahamado Jonathan Demian, is affiliated with Mass services or holds clerical status, clarifying that he is, in fact, a parishioner.
“The portrayals circulating in various news outlets seek to discredit our Mass servers and clergy, which do not accurately reflect the true circumstances,” Bishop Mamza concluded.
